Are you tired of flakes ruining your style, or a stubborn itch that just never seems to go away? Its time we get to the ROOT of the issue so you can have some real and lasting relief! So flakes and itch can come from a couple of issues, scalp psoriasis, overgrowth of yeast/bacteria on scalp, an internal imbalance in your gut or with your hormones, poor diet (which actually can help solve a few of these causes), product/oil buildup or an allergic reaction. Here are some ways that you can identify and remedy each of these causes.
Product Buildup -
Signs + Cause: White or gray flakes, tight and itchy feeling scalp and dull looking roots. You can also tell by identifying how often you oil your scalp and how often you wash your hair. If you're oiling or greasing your scalp 5-7 times a week and washing your hair 1x a month, "Houston we have a problem"
Solution: Use a clarifying shampoo before using a moisturizing shampoo to really cleanse your scalp. Wash 2-3 times in your wash day, depending on build up, use clarifying shampoo 1-2 times and then moisturizing shampoo 1-2 times. If you oil or grease your scalp daily, wash your hair weekly or biweekly at the MOST in between. If you don't want to wash your hair weekly, don't use oil/butters so frequently especially if you get bad buildup, instead of everyday, use every other day or every few days.
Dry Scalp -
Signs + Cause: Small dry, white flakes (not oily), tight feeling scalp and sensitivity. Do you moisturize your scalp before using oil? Do you use oil at all? Do you wash your hair every day or every couple to few days without using moisturizers for your scalp/hair? Are you hydrated internally? If so your dont moisturize and frequently wash your hair and you dont drink enough water or h3o, your scalp is parched!
Solution: Use moisturizing shampoos instead of clarifying shampoos until scalp becomes more moisturized, instead of washing multiple times a week, try going at least 5-7 days in between washing. Use scalp sprays using herbs like hibiscus and or marshmallow root and slippery elm. And please, don't follow this trend of not using oils, you don't have to use alot of oil, just some occasionally when your scalp feels dry, spray your scalp first with your moisturizing tea then add your oil and massage in. Also, stay hydrated drink in ounces half of your body weight in pounds either coconut water, water, fruit juice (pressed not store bought concentrate)
Dandruff/Seborrheic Dermatitis -
Signs + Cause: Yellowish/Oily flakes, redness and intense itch. This can be caused by an overgrowth of yeast called Malassezia combined with excess oil either from over oiling or excessive oil production.
Solution: Use an Herbal ACV rinse weekly before washing your hair until flakes and itch become a thing of the past, then you can go biweekly to monthly. Eliminate processed foods, excessive sugar (not from fruit) and dairy from your diet. Drink tea that aids in detoxing the body while aiding in anti inflammatory like our Eczema Relief Tea.
Scalp Psoriasis -
Signs + Cause: Thick silvery-white scales, redness, flaking that doesn't go away. What causes this is an autoimmune disorder condition that causes excess skin cell turnover.
Solution: Seek medical attention from a dermatologist, but from a holistic standpoint, manage stress, stress can be a trigger to breakouts. Focus on maintaining a healthy gut and hormonal balance. Use our ACV Herbal Rinse weekly, use gentle shampoos without harsh chemicals. And for internal support use herbs like burdock root or dandelion root or use our Eczema Relief Tea, no more processed foods, sugars, dairy and gluten. Add more leafy greens, pumpkin seed, fermented foods and probiotics to your diet.
Now there may be other underlying causes but these are the main issues I've come into contact with through clients and research. Overall if this doesn't further show that EVERYTHING is connected with our hair and our body. Solutions don't just happen at an external level, they happen internally as well If you or anyone you may know are experiencing any of these symptoms, share this with them and put the solutions into practice. No everything wont change overnight, give it a 30 day test and see if you notice any changes. Enjoy the benefits of helping your body facilitate the change you want to see/experience!
Another bonus tip I will add is RED LIGHT THERAPY, I did so much research on this technique before and kind of let it slip out of my mind but I swear it is a catalyst to our skin and scalp health as well as growth and thickening! Try some red light therapy in addition to the solutions listed and see if it makes a difference for you!
